BACK TO SCHOOL: LESSONS FROM MRS. FRIZZLE AND THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS

Back to School, Back to Routines

As the yellow buses start their engines and backpacks line the hallways, there’s a familiar energy that fills the air—anticipation, excitement, maybe even a little anxiety. Back-to-school season is here, and whether you're a student, parent, teacher, or community member, this time of year marks more than just a change in schedule—it signals a return to routines, growth, and the opportunity for a fresh start.

At Polara Health, we’re embracing the spirit of back-to-school with a whimsical nod to one of the most adventurous teachers of all time: Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus. Known for her bold fashion choices and even bolder teaching methods, Ms. Frizzle encouraged her students to “Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!” It’s a message we think still applies far beyond the classroom.

Why Routines Matter

Back-to-school season is the perfect reminder of how grounding and beneficial routines can be. After a summer of looser schedules, late bedtimes, and spontaneous activities, returning to predictable rhythms offers stability—not just for children but for all of us. Studies show that having consistent routines improves sleep, reduces stress, and boosts mental health. Whether it's setting a regular wake-up time, planning meals, or carving out moments of connection, routines help us manage the demands of everyday life more smoothly.

This time of year is also an invitation to reset—just like sharpening pencils and cracking open a fresh notebook. It’s an ideal moment to revisit goals, reinforce healthy habits, and check in on emotional well-being. The transition doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to be intentional.

A Community in the Classroom—and Beyond

At Polara Health, we see the classroom as a symbol of community—a place where learning, connection, and growth happen side by side. But community doesn’t end at the school gates. As an organization, we’re committed to supporting our neighbors throughout Yavapai County through every season of life.

Back-to-school isn’t just about academics. It’s about building resilience, friendships, and the skills to navigate life's inevitable ups and downs. It’s also a time when stress can spike—children adjusting to new environments, parents juggling schedules, and teachers managing full classrooms. That’s why it's important to remember: mental health matters year-round, and support is always within reach.

What Would Ms. Frizzle Say?

Ms. Frizzle taught us that the best way to learn is by diving in. At Polara Health, we encourage the same approach to mental wellness—ask questions, explore your emotions, and don’t be afraid to “get messy.” Growth can be uncomfortable, but it’s also where the magic happens.

As we head into this new school year, let’s channel a little Frizz-energy. Be curious. Be bold. Support one another. Whether you're helping a child adjust to kindergarten, starting a new semester yourself, or simply resetting your own daily routine, remember: there’s no right way to do this—only your way.

Let’s Ride the Bus Together

This August, as part of our Polara Connect staff campaign, we’re celebrating the themes of back-to-school and curiosity. Internally, we’re sharing our own “first day” photos, stories of growth, and maybe even a few funky outfits worthy of Ms. Frizzle herself. Externally, we’re here for our community with services and support to help make this transition a little smoother for everyone.

So grab your backpack, lace up your shoes, and let’s get on the bus. Because when we support each other—through transitions, routines, and messes—we all move forward together.
